Jeju Culture Center publishes ‘Enlarged Tamnaji’ Korean edition
Book offers unique look at 18th century Jeju life
The Jeju Culture Center has published a Korean edition of the (탐라지) “Enlarged Tamnaji,” which is a book about local life as it was hundreds of years ago that is now part of the collection at Japan’s Tenri University.
Scholars believe the head of Jejumok, (윤시동)Yoon Si-dong, planned the document. He was appointed in 1765. Researchers say district staff then edited the “Enlarged Tamnaji.”
Historians say it offers a unique glimpse of life in 18th century Jeju.
The book was taken from Jeju by Keij? Imperial University professor Imanishi Ryu. His descendants donated it to Tenri University in 1960.
