Fewer people moving to Jeju
Monthly net gain in population drops to 620 in January

People are still moving to the island from elsewhere in the country, but they’re coming in fewer numbers.

Statistics Korea says about 11,000 people moved to Jeju in January, while about 10,400 left, resulting in a net gain of roughly 620 new residents.

That figure had been right around 1,000 from 2014 through the second half of last year, when it fell below 1,000. It hit its lowest point in two years last month.

Analysts say there are a couple of main reasons for the decline. They cite rising land prices that have pushed housing costs too high, and a lack of adequate transportation infrastructure.


지난달 620명 순유입…증가세 주춤

제주 순유입인구 증가세가 주춤하고 있습니다.

통계청에 따르면 지난달 제주는 1만 1천여 명이 들어오고 1만 4백 명이 빠져나가면서 순 유입인구는 620 명으로 집계됐습니다.

제주 순유입 인구는 지난 2014년 이후 매월 1천명 내외를 보였지만, 지난해 하반기부터 세자릿수로 떨어진 뒤 지난달에는 최근 2년 사이 가장 낮은 수치를 기록했습니다.

통계청은 도내 부동산 가격 상승으로 인한 주거비 부담과 교통 인프라 부족 등의 이유로 증가세가 꺾였다고 분석했습니다 .
