1,500 undocumented aliens voluntarily leave during grace period
Reduced penalties through end of May

A large number of undocumented aliens have taken advantage of a voluntary departure program to leave the island with reduced penalties.

According to the Jeju District Prosecutor's Office, 1,473 left the island between March first and April 14th.

That’s more than the figure for all of 2016 ? 1,287.

The prosecutor’s office says it will encourage more people who are here illegally to leave through the end of next month. It will either waive penalties altogether or reduce the period during which they are not allowed to return.

As of last year, authorities estimated that there were around 78-hundred non-Koreans who had traveled to the island through the visa waiver program and then remained here illegally.

계도기간 불법체류자 1,400명 자진출국

지난달부터 출입국사범 자진출국 계도기간이 운영되고 있는 가운데 자진 출국하는 불법체류자가 크게 늘고 있습니다.

제주지방검찰청에 따르면 지난달 1일부터 지난 16일까지 46일 동안 자진출국 한 도내 불법체류자는 1천473명입니다.

이는 지난해 한해 동안 1천287명을 훨씬 넘어서는 수치입니다.

검찰은 다음달 말까지 입국규제를 면제하거나 입국금지기간을 줄여주는 등 자진 출국을 유도하기로 했습니다.

한편 지난해 기준 제주도에 무사증 입국한 외국인 가운데 불법체류자는 7천780여 명에 이르는 것으로 추산되고 있습니다.
