1. Traditional rituals being held island-wide
Events in 35 communities through end of April

Rituals are being performed in dozens of fishing villages across the island in the hopes of having a safe and prosperous year.

The first event was February 9th in Shinheung, Jocheon-eup. There will be rites for local haenyo in 35 communities through the end of April.

The ceremonies are held by each village between the first and third months on the lunar calendar. The villages have different names for the rituals: (용왕굿) Yongwanggut, (영등굿) Yeongdeunggut, (해신제) Heasinje, and (수신제) Susinje.

As part of efforts to preserve traditional culture, the provincial government began providing financial support to hold the rituals last year. The amount depends on the scale of the events.

The Yeongdeunggut (영등굿) is based on a god named (영등) Yeongdeung, who is thought to arrive in Jeju on the first day of the second lunar month, move to Udo Island 15 days later, and then depart for another year.

무사안녕·풍어 기원 '해녀굿' 봉행

해녀들의 무사안녕과 풍어를 기원하는 전통의례인 해녀굿이 지난 9일 조천읍 신흥어촌계를 시작으로 오는 4월까지 도내 35개 어촌계에서 봉행됩니다.

각 마을 어촌계가 주관하는 '해녀굿'은 음력 1월 초부터 3월 초까지 두 달간 이어지며 용왕굿이나 영등굿, 해신제, 수신제 등 다양한 명칭으로 불리고 있습니다.

제주도는 전통문화가 사라지는 것을 방지하기 위해 지난해부터 굿 규모에 따라 제례비용 일부를 지원하고 있습니다.

한편 해녀굿의 대표격인 영등굿은 바람의 신 영등신이 매년 음력 2월 초하룻날 제주에 왔다가 15일 우도를 통해 본국으로 되돌아간다는 설화에 바탕을 두고 있습니다
