4. After school English programs allowed for 1st and 2nd grade
Disadvantaged middle and high schools will also benefit

The National Assembly passed an amendment to the public education normalization law on Wednesday, allowing after school English programs to be offered to first and second grade elementary school students. It was previously denied last year by the Legislation and Judiciary Committee.

It also allows after school programs to operate in middle schools and high schools in agricultural and fishing villages, as well as those in low-income areas. Classes will be offered every day to these schools. The amendment is valid through February 28th of 2025.

국회는 13일 본회의에서
이같은 내용을 골자로 한
공교육 정상화법 개정안을 통과시켰습니다.

개정안은
초등학교 1·2학년의 방과후 영어수업은
선행학습금지법 대상에서 제외했습니다.

이번 개정안에는 농산어촌과 도시 저소득층 밀집지역에 소재한 중고교 및 고교 휴업일에 한해 2025년 2월28일까지 방과후 학교를 통한 선행교육을 허용하는 내용도 포함됐다.

초등 1ㆍ2학년 방과후 영어 수업을 허용하는 공교육정상화법은
지난해 법개정이 추진됐지만 법사위 의결에서 무산됐었습니다.
