5. Torch relay to mark 100th anniversary of Korean Independence Movement
2,019 runners to hold 100 flames across nation over 42 days

The “Independence Torch Relay” commemorating the 100th anniversary of the March First Independence Movement was held in part in Jocheon-eup on Thursday.

Hosted by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the event was attended by some 100 people, including the director of Veterans Affairs, the Jeju Haenyeo Anti-Japanese Movement Committee, as well as relatives of veterans.
The participants walked the 1 km stretch of road between the Yeonbukjeong (연북정) coast in Jocheon (조천) and Mansae Hill while shouting “Hurrah for independence.”

The event also held a performance on the sea reproducing the Jeju haenyeos plight against Japanese oppression.

The Independence Torch Relay will be held from March 1st through April 11th, the day of the establishment of Korea’s interim government.
During the event, a total of 2,019 runners will hold flames in 100 different locations across the nation, memorializing the 100th anniversary of the March First Independence movement.

3·1운동 100주년을 기념한 '독립의 횃불 릴레이' 행사가
21일 제주시 조천읍 만세동산 일원에서 열렸습니다.

보훈청이 주최한 행사에서는
애국지사 유족과 보훈단체장,
제주해녀항일운동기념사업위원회 등 100여명이
조천 연북정 해안에서
만세동산까지 1km 구간을 걸으며 독립만세를 외쳤습니다.

특히 일제탄압에 맞섰던 제주 해녀들의 항일 운동을 재현하는
바다 봉송 퍼포먼스도 진행됐습니다.

독립의 횃불 릴레이 행사는 3월 1일부터
대한민국 임시정부수립일인 다음달 11일까지 42일동안
모두 2019명의 주자가
전국 100곳에서 횃불을 들고
3.1 운동 100주년을 알리게 됩니다.
