1. Council speaker demands a poll on new airport
Governor refuses to change his original stance

Provincial council Speaker Kim Tae-seok officially requested Governor Won Hee-ryong to conduct a public survey on constructing the new airport on Jeju Island.

He demanded that the governor to prioritize local residents over his personal beliefs at the closing speech of the provincial council meeting held Thursday.

The governor had previously said at the question and answer session at the provincial council that “there are no legal grounds on performing a public poll on the second airport project’.

The speaker refuted this statement saying that the governor should prioritize the happiness and the well-being of residents and the environment of the island. Kim further argued that islanders should be given the right to make decisions on major issues that may influence their daily livelihood.

The governor had previously rejected the request for the public survey saying it would be inconsistent with the government’s previous stance.

김 의장은 특히
원 지사가 도정질문 답변에서
제2공항 공론조사에 법적 근거가 없다고 한 발언을 반박하며
모든 것을 공론조사할 수는 없지만
제주도의 미래와 도민 행복, 환경을 고려할 때
도민의 자기결정권은 실현돼야 한다고 강조했습니다.

앞서 원 지사는
제주도가 정부에 요구해 현재에 와 있는 상황에서
제주도가 입장을 바꿔 공론절차를 밟겠다는 것은
일관성 차원에서 맞지 않다며 거부한 바 있습니다.
