Gotjawal Forest maintains lower temperatures even in summer heat
NIFS urges proper preservation of ‘lungs of Jeju’

A study has found that Gotjawal, the forest that is considered to be the “lungs of Jeju Island”, has recorded lower temperatures than other areas of the island.

The National Institute of Forest Science said they collected and analyzed the meteorological data from eight different areas of Gotjawal over the past seven years and found that the average temperature in August inside Gotjawal was about 2 degrees lower than outside of the forest.

The institute explained that this is due to transpiration, the shade effect, and the reduction in reflective heat.

They added that Although the Gotjawal forest only makes up about 6% of Jeju Island, it has the power to reduce the total temperature of the province if it is properly preserved and managed.

국립산림과학원은
도내 곶자왈시험림 8곳에서
지난 7년 동안 기상 자료를 수집해 분석한 결과
곶자왈 내부의 8월 평균 기온이
외부보다 약 2도 낮은 것으로 확인됐다고 밝혔습니다.

이는 나무의 증산작용과 그늘효과,
반사열 저감 효과 때문이라고 과학원은 설명했습니다.

특히 곶자왈은 제주도 전체의 약 6%에 불과하지만
지속적으로 보존 관리한다면
기온을 낮추는 효과도 있을 것으로 판단된다고 강조했습니다.
