Governor accused of illegal donation, breaking election act
Governor Won Hee-ryong, who caused controversy over his violation of the election law by purchasing pizza for trainees at the Deo Keun Nae-il Center(더큰내일센터) back in January, has finally been brought to court.
The Jeju District Prosecutor’s Office said they investigated Governor Won’s violation of the Public Official Election Act, which was filed by the Jeju Election Commission, and indicted him without physical restraint on the 22nd.
However, the government officials who were in charge of making the pizza orders were released without charges as they were merely performing their duties as an employee.
In response, the governor expressed that the indictment made against him is a regrettable act and emphasized that encouraging young people in Jeju is a legitimate administrative action within the scope of the governor's duties.
Meanwhile, under the Election Act, illegal donations can be punished by imprisonment for up to 5 years or a fine of up to 10 million won.
1. 제주지검, '피자 선물' 원 지사 선거법 위반 기소

지난 1월 더큰내일센터 교육생들에게 피자를 선물해
선거법 위반 논란을 빚었던 원희룡 지사가 결국 법정에 서게 됐습니다.

제주지방검찰청은
제주도선거관리위원회가 고발한 원희룡 지사에 대한
공직선거법 위반 사건을 수사한 결과
기부행위 금지 규정 위반으로 판단하고
22일 불구속 기소했다고 밝혔습니다.

또 지난해 12월 원 지사가 개인 유튜브 채널에서 홈쇼핑 형식으로
죽 세트를 홍보한 것도 선거법상 기부행위를 위반한 것으로
봤습니다.

다만 피자 주문 등 실무를 담당한 공무원에 대해서는
알선이 아닌 직무상 지시를 수행한 것으로 판단하고 혐의없음 처분했습니다.

이에대해 원희룡 지사는
검찰이 공직선거법 위반 혐의를 적용해 기소한 것에 대해
납득할 수 없다며 유감의 뜻을 밝혔습니다.

원 지사는 입장문을 통해
제주청년들을 격려하고
제주산 제품들의 판로 개척을 지원하는 것은
도지사의 직무범위안에서 이루어진
정당한 행정행위이라 강조했습니다.

한편 선거법상 기부행위는
5년 이하의 징역이나 1천만원 이하의 벌금형에 처해질 수 있습니다
