Protestors stage sit-in strike atop Dream Tower
Construction subcontractors demand billions in overdue payments
Construction subcontractors who worked on Jeju’s tallest building, the Dream Tower, are now staging a sit-in strike on its rooftop. The protestors are demanding that they receive billions of won in unpaid wages and fees.
Approximately 40 members of Dream Tower's partner emergency council set up barbed wire at the entrance of the rooftop and began occupying the building. Protesters are demanding that 60 billion won is due to be paid to the construction companies including China State Construction Engineering, and its contractor Green Land Group.
Rallies have also been ongoing for the last four months on the ground floor of Dream Tower, since it first opened its doors at the end of last year.
Meanwhile, Lotte Tourism Development, the operator of Dream Tower, stated that they are undergoing recalculations through a third party agency due to findings of a large gap in claimed fees among the constructor and affiliated company.
