Won Heeryong resigns from Jeju governor
He will focus on presidential primary election

At a press conference Governor Won Hee-ryong announced that he would resign as the governor to allow for regime change on the first.

Governor Won also revealed his feelings of gratitude during his leadership of the Jeju provincial government for the past 7 years.

He said that he gave all his passion during his rewarding term of office, and confidently stated that Jeju has become a desirable destination that Koreans wish to travel and live.

He also expressed regret for not being able to complete his tenure with ongoing issues including COVID- 19 and the second airport.

He could have chosen to run for an intra-party election while remaining in his position, but he explained the urgency in changing the regime with all his efforts.

Prior to the press conference, Governor Won visited the April 3rd Peace Park and paid his respects to the victims as his last official schedule as governor.

Then, he visited the village of Gangjeong, Seogwipo City, where the controversial construction of the Jeju naval base had been ongoing for years, he then met with residents and volunteered to collect marine debris at Bomok Port.

Governor Won plans to set up a presidential campaign office in the Yongsan Building in front of the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul and will focus on the intra party primary elections.

원 지사는 제주도청 탐라홀에서 기자회견을 열고 국민의 삶을 지키는 정권 교체를 위해 도지사직을 내려 놓는다고 밝혔습니다.

원 지사는 지난 7년 동안 제주도정을 이끌어왔던 수장으로서의 소회도 밝혔습니다.

자신의 모든 열정을 쏟아낸 보람찬 시간이었다며 제주는 우리나라에서 누구나 가고 싶고 가장 살고 싶은 곳으로 자리잡았다고 자평했습니다.

코로나19 대유행과 제2공항 문제 등 지역 현안이 산적한 상황에서
임기를 다 채우지 못한데 대해 송구스러운 마음도 내비쳤습니다.

도지사직을 유지하면서 당내 경선을 치를 수도 있었지만 정권 교체를 위해 모든 것을 쏟아부어야 한다는 절박함이 컸다고 설명했습니다.

원 지사는 사퇴 기자 회견에 앞서 도지사로서의 마지막 공식 일정으로 4·3평화공원을 찾아 희생자 영령을 참배했습니다.

그리고는 제주해군기지 건설로 수년간 논란을 겪은 서귀포 강정마을을
방문해 주민들을 만나고 보목항에서 해양 쓰레기 수거 봉사를 펼쳤습니다.

앞으로 원 지사는 서울 여의도 국회 앞 용산빌딩에 대선캠프 사무실을 마련하고 우선 당내 경선에 주력할 것으로 알려졌습니다.
