Student Rights Infringed

It has been confirmed that faculty members at one of the girls' high schools in Jeju City have used abusive language, infringing the human rights of the students.

The Province Office of Education revealed that some of the students experienced discrimination, violent language, and infringement of personal data according to the results of a survey conducted by POE. The POE conducted the survey followed by the reports of human rights abuse made on March 15th.

The POE added that the violations were not problems mainly caused by teachers, but that they were structural issues and caused by school culture. The office also said that there was a limitation to collecting objective facts.

The POE released a recommendation which asks the principal to take strict measures on the faculty member who was confirmed to violate students’ human rights.

제주시내 모 여고 학생 인권침해 논란과 관련해
교사의 폭언 등이 사실로 드러났습니다.

제주도교육청은
지난 3월 15일 접수된 인권침해 진정건에 대한 실태조사 결과
교사에 의한 폭언과 차별, 개인정보 보호, 의사 표현 등의
인권침해가 일부 있었음을 확인했다고 밝혔습니다

다만 교사 몇몇의 문제가 아니라
학교문화와 구조적인 문제로 인권침해가 있었고
객관적 사실관계를 확인하기에 한계가 있었다고 설명했습니다.

교육청은 권고안을 통해 우선 사실관계가 확인된 교사에 대해
학교장 조치를 취할 것을 권고했습니다.
