Fewer Pets Abandoned, Pet Industry Booms



The total number of companion animals in Jeju is just over 95,000.
Considering that there are 280,000 households in Jeju, one house in three has a companion animal.

It's always pretty and well behaved. I have no choice but to raise it because of my daughter, but it's so pretty and nice.


As of the end of last year, 53,000 companion animals, or more than 55 percent of all companion animals, were registered in Jeju.
On the other hand, the number of abandoned animals has decreased.

The number of abandoned animals in Jeju, which exceeded 7,600 in 2018, fell to around 6,600 in 2020.
Last year, that number fell below 5,000. Compared to 2018, that’s a 35 percent decrease in the number of abandoned animals.


As the number of families living with animals grows, there has been a corresponding increase in the number of animal beauty salons, cafes for dogs, and dog food manufacturers.


The number of pet-related businesses in Jeju nearly doubled, from 155 in 2018 to 302 last year, with more than 400 people working in the industry.


However, some animals are still abandoned and abused. A more widespread culture of pet care is needed.
Moreover, the problem of a lack of pet funeral facilities on the island needs to be addressed.

More see domesticated animals as companion animals. The pet population continues to increase. We plan to build a province-funded shelter for abandoned animals first, and next year build a pet burial facility.

With the island’s pet population topping 100,000, it’s clear that these furry family friends deserve just as much care and attention as they give to us.





반려동물 10만 시대…유기 줄고 업계 늘고


제주지역의 반려동물 수는 모두 9만 5천여 마리.

제주의 가구수가 28만에 이르는 점을 감안하면
세집당 한집꼴로
반려동물과 함께 지내고 있습니다.

항상 예쁘고 좋아요. 딸 때문에 어쩔 수 없이 키우기는 하는데
키우다 보니까 너무 예쁘고 좋아요.


단순히 애완동물이 아니라
함께 살아가는
반려동물이라는 인식이 자리 잡으면서
지난해 말 기준
전체 반려동물의 55%가 넘는
5만 3천여 마리가 등록됐습니다.

반면 유기동물 발생 건수는
해마다 줄고 있는 것으로 나타났습니다.

지난 2018년,
7천 600마리가 넘었던
제주의 유기동물 수는
2020년 6천 마릿대로 낮아졌습니다.

지난해에는 5천마리 아래로 떨어지며
2018년과 비교하면
유기동물 발생이 35%가량 줄었습니다.

반려동물과 함께 지내는 가구가 늘면서
자연스레 동물미용업과
애견카페, 사료제조업체 등도 증가했습니다.


지난 2018년 155개소였던
도내 반려동물 관련 업체는
지난해 302개소로 두배 가까이 증가했고

관련 종사자는 400명이 넘는 것으로 조사됐습니다.


하지만 일부에서 벌어지는 유기와 학대 등
여전히 부족한 동물보호문화와
제주에 없는 반려동물 장묘시설 등의
인프라 구축은 앞으로 해결해야할 과제입니다.

시대적 흐름이 달라지고 있습니다.
