The number of elementary school students continues to decline, with projections suggesting a nearly 30% drop in five years.

According to the medium-term student placement plan announced by the Jeju Provincial Office of Education(POE), the number of elementary school students is expected to decrease by 5% to 8% annually starting next year due to the decline in the school-age population. By the 2029, it is predicted to decrease by about 11,000 students, or 29.5%, compared to this year.

Meanwhile, the number of middle school students is expected to remain around 20,000 until the 2027 academic year but is projected to decline significantly starting in 2028.

The number of high school students is expected to continue to increase until the 2028 academic year.



초등학생 감소세 계속…2029년 30% 줄어

해마다 초등학생 수가 줄면서 5년 후에는 현재보다 30% 가까이 감소할 것으로 전망됐습니다.

제주도교육청이 발표한 중기 학생 배치계획에 따르면 초등학생은 학령인구 감소로 내년부터 매년 5에서 8% 줄어 5년 후인 2029학년도에는 올해와 비교해 1만 1천여명, 29.5% 감소하는 것으로 예측했습니다.

반면 중학교 학생 수는 2027학년도까지 2만명 대를 유지하다 2028학년도부터 감소 폭이 클 것으로 전망됐습니다.

고등학교 학생 수는 2028학년도까지 지속적으로 증가세가 유지될 것으로 예상됐습니다.
