The Coast Guard has announced a focused crackdown on drug-related crimes, set to continue through July, as part of efforts to strengthen maritime security and curb narcotics trafficking.

To prevent narcotics smuggling via maritime routes, the Coast Guard will tighten surveillance on drug use and trafficking among fishery workers and bolster intelligence-gathering operations.

In particular, the Coast Guard will crack down on the cultivation and sale of poppied, classified as a natural narcotic, as part of the wider effort.

The Coast Guard emphasized that poppies, which are often mistaken for ornamental plants, should be reported to the Coast Guard's drug investigation unit or the nearest maritime police station if discovered.

Last year, the Coast Guard seized approximately 2,000 poppy plants that were being illegally cultivated in the region.
