A memorial service marking the 10th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force Colonel Dean Hess, who saved over 1,000 war orphans during the Korean War, was held on the 22nd at the Jeju Aerospace Museum.
More than 70 years on, his legacy continues to resonate.

A ceremony is held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the passing of Colonel Dean Hess, a Korean War hero and the so-called “father of war orphans.”

[Slug] December 1950 ? Evacuated Over 1,000 War Orphans to Jeju


In December 1950, just before the January 4th Retreat, Colonel Hess played a decisive role in evacuating more than 1,000 war orphans from Seoul to Jeju using transport planes.

This humanitarian rescue mission, known as "Operation Kiddy Car," moved and inspired many, to the extent that it was later adapted into a Hollywood film.
Even after the war, he frequently returned to Korea to care for the orphans and took the lead in fundraising efforts for war orphans for over 20 years.

The Chinese forces were about to seize Seoul. It was the end of December. If that plane hadn't rescued us, we wouldn't be alive today. About a thousand children were saved.

Notably, while training Korean Air Force pilots, he earned the title “Godfather of the Korean Air Force.”
During the early stages of the war, he flew more than 250 combat missions in one year, contributing greatly to the defeat of enemy ground forces.

Colonel Hess’s memorial monument was erected in 2017 at the Jeju Aerospace Museum, in recognition of his ties to Jeju where many war orphans were evacuated.

Since then, the Korean Air Force has held an annual memorial service to honor his achievements.

헤스 대령은 1.4 후퇴를 앞둔 1950년 12월 수송기를 동원해
전쟁고아 1천여 명을 서울에서 제주로 피신시키는데
결정적인 역할을 했습니다.

'작은 천사 작전'으로 불린 이 인도적 구조 활동은
헐리우드 영화로도 제작될 정도로 많은 사람들에게 감동을 줬습니다.

그는 전후에도 수시로 우리나라를 찾아 고아들을 돌봤고,
20여년 간 전쟁고아 후원금 모금활동에도 앞장섰습니다.

'한국 공군의 대부'라는 호칭을 얻었습니다.

전쟁 초기에는 1년 동안 250여 차례 직접 출격하며
적 지상군을 격퇴하는 데 크게 기여했습니다.

딘 헤스 대령의 기념비는
