It’s been two weeks since the bus-only median lane system was introduced on Seogwang-ro (서광로) road. While the province has pushed several supplements and improvements to address the initial confusion, many issues remain unresolved.

It’s been over two weeks since the opening, but the initial confusion has not yet completely resolved.

Complaints continue, especially from the elderly, about confusion over boarding locations and lack of bus seating.

Since all the stops are clustered together, older people often can’t tell which side is east or west once they’re inside.

(정류장이) 한꺼번에 되다보니까 나이먹은 분들은 안에 들어가서 동쪽인지 서쪽인지 구분 못할 때가 상당히 많은 거죠.

In response to various complaints, the province has proposed some improvements for the Seogwang-ro route.

[Slug] Direction labels changed to ‘Shin-Jeju Bound’ and ‘City Hall Bound’


Boarding direction signs now use clearer labels like “Shin-Jeju Bound” and “City Hall Bound,” replacing the former street name system.

[Slug] Additional boarding maps attached; painted road lines improved

Additional boarding maps have been posted and painted road surface lines have been improved.

They’re also augmenting bus information system monitoring and on-site inspections.

However, officials haven’t been able to find a realistic solution for the split-station issue.

[Slug] Route 100 and 200 now use central lane near Jeju Terminal toward City Hall


As part of the new improvement plan, Routes 100 and 200, which previously used roadside stops, now run on the newly built central lane between Jeju Terminal and City Hall. The aim is to reduce congestion on side lanes?but this only applies to that specific section.

More than 30% of all bus routes on Seogwang-ro still have to use roadside bus stops.

[Slug] Unified stop system expected by 2028


The province projects that all buses will be able to use the island-style platforms by 2028?three years from now.

For intercity routes like the 200-series, we plan to speed up the introduction of high-platform dual-door buses, and by 2028, all buses will use island-style bus stops for boarding and alighting.

Later this year, the province intends to build more central lanes and island-style bus stops on Donggwang-ro, spanning from Gwangyang Intersection to Jeju National Museum.

However, there are growing concerns that this project is being rushed.

"보완은 했다지만"…불편은 그대로 '한계'

개통된 지 2주가 지났지만
도입 초기 혼란이 완전히 해소되지 못하고 있습니다.

주로 어르신들을 중심으로
탑승 위치 혼선과
버스 좌석 부족 문제가 꾸준히 제기되고 있습니다.

서광로 구간이 개통에 관한 여러 민원에
제주도가 일부 개선책을 내놨습니다.

[탑승 방향 표기 방식 '신제주 방면' '시청 방면' 등으로 교체]
우선 탑승 방향 표기 방식을
기존 도로 명칭에서
시청 방면, 신제주 방면 등으로 바꿨습니다.

[탑승 위치도 추가 부착·노면 유도선 정비]
또 탑승 위치도를 추가로 부착하고 도로 노면 유도선도 정비했습니다.

버스정보시스템 모니터링과 현장 점검을 강화하고 있습니다.

하지만 정류장 이원화 문제는
현실적으로 대안을 만들지 못하고 있습니다.

[제주터미널에서 시청 방면 운행 100·200번 버스 중앙차로 주행]
이번에 개선방안으로
가로변 정류장을 이용하고 있는 100번, 200번 버스의 경우
새롭게 조성된
중앙 차로를 주행하며
가로변 차로를 비워주기로 했지만
문제는 제주터미널과 시청 구간으로 한정하고 있습니다.

서광로 구간에서 운행되는 전체 노선 가운데
30% 이상은
여전히 가로변 정류장을 이용해야 하는 실정입니다.

[정류장 일원화 시기 2028년 예상]
제주도는 모든 버스가 섬식 정류장에서
승하차할 수 있는 시기를 2028년, 앞으로 3년 후로 내다보고 있습니다.

섬식 정류장을 추가 조성할 예정이어서
밀어붙이기식은 아닌지 논란과 걱정이 커지고 있습니다.
