5. Jeju City plans better forecasts of oriental armyworms
Insects cause massive damage every year

Jeju City will take more steps to forecast the arrival of the oriental armyworm, a pest that wreaks havoc on local plants every year.

The insect, which is actually a moth, flies to Jeju from China between the end of May and mid-June.

The city will monitor 50 pastures, including those at village, private, and state-owned farms, more than twice a week to determine how many of the insects have arrived and how many more are expected.

The insects have not yet been found on the island this year. They damaged some 14-hundred hectares of local land last year.

멸강나방 발생 시기 도래…예찰 강화

목초지와 식물에 큰 피해를 주는 멸강나방 발생 시기가 다가오면서 이에 대한 예찰이 강화됩니다.

제주시는 마을공동목장과 기업목장, 관영목장 등 목초지 50여 곳을 대상으로
주 2회 이상 멸강나방 발생 여부를 예찰하기로 했습니다.

멸강나방은 중국에서 날아드는 해충으로 5월 말에서 6월 중순 사이에 발생하며
목초와 옥수수 등에 피해를 주고 있습니다.

올 들어 제주에서는 아직 발견되지 않고 있으며 지난해의 경우 1천 400여 헥타르에서 멸강나방 피해가 발생했습니다.
