5. ‘Udo Island formed about 70,000 years ago’
New research suggests isle is much younger than thought

Researchers say they have determined Udo Island formed much later than previously thought.

The provincial office of World Natural Heritage Jeju World Heritage Center says it formed about 70,000 years ago. Scientists arrived at that number by studying the age of the lava that formed the small island, which lies to the east of Jeju.

This newest figure is 16,000 to 40,000 years later than previous estimates.

The World Natural Heritage office says this research is highly reliable because it is based on the study of sediment that dates to both the early and late periods of volcanic activity on Udo.

"우도 연대측정…7만년 전 형성"

섬 속의 섬 우도가 약 7만년 전 형성됐다는 새로운 연구결과가 나왔습니다.

제주세계유산본부가 우도 용암 분출 시기를 연대측정한 결과 지금으로부터 약 7만 년 전 화산활동으로 우도가 형성됐다고 밝혔습니다.

이같은 결과는 우도 형성시기를 8만 6천년 전에서 11만 4천년 전까지로 추정했던 기존 연대보다 1만 6천년에서 4만년 가까이 빠른 것입니다.

유산본부는 화산활동 초기와 후기 퇴적물 시료를 채취해 얻은 연대로 신뢰도가 높다고 밝혔습니다.
