Immigration office denies official refugee status

Officials have granted humanitarian stay permits to 23 of the Yemenis who came to Jeju and applied for refugee status in the first half of the year.

The Ministry of Justice’s Jeju Immigration Service announced Friday the results of its screening of 484 applications from Yemenis seeking asylum. The 23 include families with young children, pregnant women, minors, and the injured.

They were granted a one-year stay on humanitarian grounds. Immigration officials denied them official refugee status because they fail to meet the five criteria defined by the Refugee Convention and the Refugee Law.

The immigration office says it will finish its review of the remaining 40-or-so Yemeni asylum seekers’ applications next month and then announce its decisions on them.

22 of 23 people who received permission to stay in the country will leave Jeju for Seoul or Busan.

올해 상반기 제주에 들어와 난민 신청을 한 예민인들 가운데 23명에 대해 인도적 차원의 체류허가 결정이 내려졌습니다.

법무부 제주출입국.외국인청은 14일 예멘 난민 신청자 484명 가운데 영유아 동반 가족과 임신부, 미성년자, 부상자 등 23명을 인도적 차원에서 1년간 체류를 허용한다고 밝혔습니다.

다만 이들이 난민협약과 난민법상 5개 박해사유에 해당하지 않아 난민 지위는 부여하지 않기로 했습니다.

제주 출입국.외국인청은 남은 예멘 난민 신청자 40여명에 대해 다음달 중 심사를 마치고 최종 결정할 예정입니다.

한편 체류허가를 받은 23명 가운데 22명은 서울과 부산 등으로 제주를 떠날것으로 알려졌습니다.
