Growing worries over white radish overproduction

Authorities say winter vegetable cultivation in Jeju is concentrated in western regions.

The provincial government concluded through a survey that the vegetables are being grown on about 14,000 hectares. That’s 1.8 percent less land compared to last year.

Researchers project that garlic, onion and chive production will fall, while farmers will grow more white radishes, cabbages, and beets, all of which are mainly cultivated in western Jeju.

The area dedicated to the cultivation of white radishes is up 6.2 percent compared to last year to 51-hundred hectares, raising concerns about a glut in the supply of that vegetable.

월동채소 서부지역 쏠려…월동무 '과잉생산'

제주 월동채소는 서부지역을 중심으로 재배되고 있는 것으로 나타났습니다.

제주특별자치도가 주요 월동채소 재배면적을 조사한 결과 1만 4천헥타아르로 지난해 보다 1.8% 감소했습니다.

마늘과 양파, 쪽파 생산량은 줄 것으로 예상되는 가운데 월동무와 양배추, 비트는 증가할 것으로 조사됐으며 증가분이 서부지역에 집중된 것으로 분석됐습니다.

특히 월동무 재배면적은 5천 100헥타아르로 지난해보다 6.2% 증가해 과잉생산이 우려되고 있습니다.
