The province of Jeju is currently split into two administrative cities, but a new proposal would boost that to four cities, the mayors of which would be elected, rather than appointed as they are now.

The provincial government says the administrative reorganization committee has accepted a reorganization recommendation that was submitted in June 2017. Local officials will submit a related motion to revise the Jeju Special Law during next month’s extraordinary session.

A motion to make specific changes to the island’s cities will be submitted later, because it could be accomplished by revising the original ordinance, assuming it passes.

Governor Won Heeryong says he supports letting local voters decide these issues because they would have a major impact on area residents.

제주도는 행정체제개편위원회가 지난해 6월 제출한 행정체제개편 권고안을
수용해 제주특별법 개정안에 따른 제도개선 동의안을 다음달 임시회에 제출하겠다고 밝혔습다.

행정시 권역조정은 조례로 개정할 수 있는 만큼 특별법 처리여부를 보면서 차후에 발의하기로 했습니다.

원희룡 도지사는 행정시장 직선제와 권역조정 모두 주민에게 중대한 영향을 미칠 수 있어 주민투표를 실시하는게 바람직하다는 의견을 제시하기도 했습니다.
