Governor says facility will have a major impact on economy

The governor says there is no question that the island needs a second airport and that it will have a massive impact on the local economy.

Won Hee-ryong delivered a message Wednesday to the people of Jeju on the occasion of the foundation of the basic plan for the airport. While speaking from the Provincial Office, he said the national government had uncovered no damage to area “oreum” or caves as part of the airport development plan. Those conclusions were based on a re-evaluation of the area after suspicions were raised about environmental damage.

The governor also argued that it was crucial for the airport’s basic plan to reflect Jeju’s needs and priorities. He said it should include support measures for local residents, mid- and long-term investment plans, a facilitation plan for the local economy, and the construction of a connecting road to the new airport.

Finally, Won said he would do everything he could as governor to overcome the controversy and conflict surrounding the proposed airport and get the project back on track.

원 지사는 20일 제주도청 기자실에서 제2공항 기본계획 수립에 즈음한 도민께 드리는 말씀을 통해 정부는 그동안 제기된 의혹들에 대한 재조사를 통해 오름이나 동굴훼손이 없다는 점을 밝혔고 현재 기본계획 수립을 시작했다고 말했습니다.

지금이야말로 제주도의 입장을 기본계획에 반영시켜 나갈 매우 중요한 시기라며
특히 지역주민 지원대책과 중장기 투자계획, 지역경제활성화 방안, 제2공항 연계도로를 포함해야 한다고 강조했습니다.

또 논란과 갈등을 넘어 제2공항 추진이 정상 궤도에 들어설 수 있도록 도지사로서 할 수 있는 모든 노력을 다하겠다고 덧붙였습니다.
