2. ‘More than half of marine debris is plastic’
Study of 1,200 pieces of debris in 2 locations

A new study suggests that more than half of the marine debris in the ocean around Jeju is plastic.

The Jeju office of the Korea Federation for Environmental Movements and the Korea Zero Waste Movement Network studied some 12-hundred pieces of marine debris from (김녕리) Gimnyeong-ri and (사계리) Sagye-ri. 59 percent of it was plastic.

Most of the plastic waste was PET bottles or fishing equipment. Following plastic, the next most common types of debris found were glass, wood, and foreign waste.

The two organizations urged the provincial government to do something, saying it hasn’t researched the issue itself or hired another agency to do so, even though plastic waste is becoming a growing threat to the local seashore.

제주지역 해양쓰레기 가운데 절반 이상은 플라스틱이라는 조사 결과가 나왔습니다.

제주환경운동연합과 제주자원순환사회연대가 공동으로 김녕리와 사계리 해안에서 수거한 해양쓰레기 1천 2백여 개를 조사한 결과 플라스틱이 59%를 차지했다고 밝혔습니다.

플라스틱 쓰레기 대부분이 페트병이나 폐어구 등이었으며 이어 유리, 목재, 외국쓰레기 순으로 수거됐습니다.

이들 단체는 플라스틱 쓰레기가 연안을 위협하고 있지만 제주도는 조사활동이나 연구용역에 나서고 있지 않다며 대책을 주문했습니다.
