6. New breed of lemon ‘Jeramon’ developed in Jeju
Distribution to start this year

A new type of lemon has been developed on Jeju Island. It is being called ‘Jeramon’.

The Rural Development Administration has been conducting the research for a new variety of lemon since 2007. The Jeramon is the first lemon to be developed in Korea, and the seedlings will be distributed to farms within the year.

Jeramon lemons have shown to be highly resistant to cold weather and boasts a high acidic content at 8.5 percent.

More than 90% of the lemons sold in Korea are currently imported from the U.S. and Chile, with a small percentage grown on Jeju.

제주산 레몬 품종 '제라몬'이 처음 개발돼 묘목이 보급됩니다.

농촌진흥청은
2007년부터 품종 연구와 교배를 시작해
우리나라 1호 레몬 품종인 제라몬을 개발하고
올해부터 농가에 묘목을 보급한다고 밝혔습니다.

제주에서 개발된 제라몬은
기존 품종보다 추위에 강하고
산 함량이 8.5%로
기존 품종보다 1% 높은 특징을 지녔습니다.

국내에 유통되는 레몬은 제주에서 일부 생산되고 있지만
미국와 칠레에서 수입하는 외국산이
90% 이상을 차지하고 있습니다.
