1. Province says ‘no’ to new duty-free shops
Concern for local DFS oligopoly

The national government ruled out Jeju and Busan out of the five candidate cities to allow large Korean retailers to open new duty-free shops.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance held a relevant committee meeting on May 14th and made the decision to rule out Jeju in consideration of the local government’s concern toward the existing oligopoly of conglomerate-owned duty-free shops in the island.

Instead, a total of six duty-free shops will be newly established in Seoul, Incheon, Gwangju, and Chungcheongnam-do Province.

Last year’s tax law reform resulted in deregulation allowing new duty-free shops run by big firms in regions with duty-free sales in excess of 200 billion won or on-year increase in foreign tourist numbers of at least 200,000.

시내면세점 제주 제외...서울 · 인천 등 추가 허가

특허를 추가하고
제주는 추가 없이 현행체제를 유지하기로 결정했습니다.

제주도는
신라와 롯데가 면세점 시장의 이익을 독식하고 있는 점을 감안해
추가 진출에
반대한다는 의견을 기재부에 제출했고
위원회에서 이같은 의견을 받아들인 것으로 알려지고 있습니다.

정부는 지난해 세법을 개정해
면세점 매출액이 전년보다 2천억원 이상 늘어났거나
외국인 방문객이 20만명 증가한 지자체에 대해
대기업 시내면세점을 추가할 수 있도록 조건을 완화했습니다.
