[slug] \36B overdue payment by Greenland a 'positive sign'

Mun pointed to Greenland's recent 36 billion won overdue payment to the project contractor as a positive sign.

Moon Dae-rim / CEO, JDC
The recent payment is significant. Greenland plans to pay the remainder by the end of August and construction may restart in September.

직접 투자 형태로 들어온 것은 매우 의미가 있고요. 8월까지 공사대금을 완납하고 9월부터 국내에서 PF(자금조달)를 일으켜서 공사를 재개한다는 계획입니다.

[slug] Yerae lawsuits 'will be addressed'

He emphasized that he will find ways to address the situation in Yerae, where nine legal suits have been filed by previous landowners and Berjaya Jeju Resort, the Korean subsidiary of the Malaysian Berjaya Group.

Previous landowners have sued the province and the JDC to reclaim land that was expropriated for the Yerae project. Berjaya has also filed a huge compensation suit against the JDC.

[slug] Solutions 'will depend on court ruling'

Mun said that his office will come up with a plan based on the court rulings and that these steps could include further litigation and non-judicial alternatives.

Moon Dae-rim / CEO, JDC
We will take the court's rulings on the landowners' lawsuits and the Berjaya compensation request into consideration. Based on the outcomes, we will consider whether to seek alternative solutions outside court.

In a related story, Mun and Jeju's Superintendent of Schools Lee Seok Moon have put forward different positions on the establishment of additional international schools in the Jeju Global Education City (JGEC).

[slug] Jeju POE opposes new ACS Jeju campus

In May, the Provincial Office of Education (POE) opposed the building of the Anglo-Chinese School of Singapore (ACS) Jeju campus. More recently, Lee expressed concern over the establishment of additional international schools in the JGEC.

Moon Dae-rim / CEO, JDC
Building international schools with private capital has been a national policy since July 2013. Opening ACS Jeju Campus has been frustrated by the POE. It is preferable if the POE head refrains from discouraging a national initiative.

Mun concluded his KCTV interview saying that in light of opposition from local farmers' associations, the JDC will seek public input on the creation of an advanced agricultural and food zone. He said that this year his office will be promoting new projects in the fields of logistics, peace making, and the environment.
