Japanese consulate fails to secure construction budget for 20 years

Provincial lawmakers Kang Seong-min and Lee Seung-ah issued a press release on August 26th calling for the immediate sale of land in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju City owned by the Japanese Consulate General. This followed after a KCTV news report on the unused property of the Japanese Consulate General since its initial date of purchase.

The Japanese consulate explained that it had continuously asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan for a budget to construct a new consulate building, but it had not been reflected.

The two lawmakers responded that the Japanese consulate should immediately sell the land back to the provincial government as there hasn’t been any progress made over the past 20 years.

강성민.이승아 의원이 26일 보도자료를 내고
해당 토지를 즉각 제주도에 매각할 것을 촉구했습니다.

일본 영사관측은
제주도에 제출한 서면답변서에서
건물신축을 위해
외무성에 지속적으로 예산을 요청했지만
반영되지 않은 결과였다고 해명했습니다.

이같은 답변서에 대해 두 의원은
20년동안 예산을 요청하고 성과가 없다는 것은
제주총영사관을
신축할 의사가 없는 것이라며
이제라도 즉각 제주도에 매각해야 한다고 강조했습니다.
