1. Committee shelves resolution on public survey of 2nd airport
Islanders submit signed petition to oppose local referendum

The provincial council’s steering committee postponed its decision on whether to pass the resolution on the formation of a special committee to conduct a public survey on the island’s second airport at its meeting today.

The committee voted whether to suspend its review of the resolution, and six out of 11 lawmakers voted in favor.

Committee members explained that they need more time to discuss the matter before finalizing their decision.

Meanwhile, representatives of Seohong-dong, Namwon-myeon and Pyoseon-myeon in Seogwipo City had submitted a motion opposing the public survey on the island’s second airport signed by more than 1,000 islanders to the steering committee head Kim Kyung-ha.

They said the new airport is necessary for balanced regional development and that the public survey will only divide islanders and stir up conflict.

부득이하게 표결로 심사보류 결정을 내렸다고 밝혔습니다

한편, 도의회 운영위원회 심사를 앞둔 어제
서귀포시 서홍동과 남원, 표선면 주민대표는
제주도의회 김경학 운영위원장에게
주민 1천여 이 서명한
제2공항 공론조사 특별위원회 구성 반대 건의서를 제출했습니다.

이들은
제2공항은 지역 균형발전과 안전을 위해 필요한 사업이라며
도민을 분열시키고
갈등을 조장하는 공론조사는 안된다고 주장했습니다.
