National Assembly passes ESEA revision bill

South Korea is taking steps toward free high school education.

A bill to amend the Elementary and Secondary Education Act was passed at the National Assembly on Thursday. Thus, the country will provide free education to all high school students starting in 2021.

A revision bill of the Local Education Finance Subsidy Act was also passed at the National Assembly on the same day.

To this end, authorities will begin free education for students in their second and third year of high school in 2020.

The Provincial Office of Education's budget for free high school education has also gained legal ground along with the national government's financial support.

고교 무상교육을 위한 초중등교육법 개정안이
31일 국회 본회의를 통과했습니다.

국회는 31일 본회의를 열고 고등학교 무상교육의 근거를 명문화한 초·중등교육법 개정안과 지방교육재정교부금법 개정안을 처리했습니다.

이에 따라 내년부터는 고등학교 2학년과 3학년,
2021학년도부터는 고등학교 전 학년에 무상교육이 적용됩니다.

제주도교육청이 자체 예산으로 우선 시행중인 고교 무상교육도
정부의 재정 지원과 함께 법적 근거를 갖게 됐습니다.
