Jeju has had the largest drought affected area in the country for the past five years.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs(MAFRA)’s data submitted to lawmaker (위성곤) Wi Seong-gon, the area of land damaged by drought covers 8,649 ha from 2017, followed by Gangwon-do and Jeollanam-do Province taking up approximately 25% of drought areas in the country.
However, only 5% of the total budget to overcome drought has been allocated to Jeju, which is 10 billion won. This is the smallest amount of budget in the country, except for Incheon City.
Lawmaker Wi said that more effective countermeasures for damaged areas should be established and policies should be put in place to effectively respond to the climate crisis
