The Jeju office of the Korea Federation for Environmental Movements revealed that the greatest number of marine debris was cigarette butts.
The federation conducted six coastal cleanup campaigns
from May to October at six beaches in Jeju.
A total of 500 kg of marine waste was collected
and it was found that 1,500 cigarette butts,
which are 25% of total rubbish,
were collected through an investigation.
In addition, plastic debris was found
in similar amounts to cigarette buts
followed by vinyls, fishing lines and plastic bottles.
The federation has asked the provincial government
to designate non-smoking areas near local beaches
based on the research results.
