Missing Long-awaited Opportunity

As the nation's "living with COVID-19" policy allows group tours that have been banned for the pandemic, tourists in groups rush to the island.
Accommodation facilities from small guest houses to five star hotels are reaching their capacity.
But many hotels can't resume business because of a shortage of staff.

This is the parking lot of Jeju International Airport.
Spaces for chartered buses that were empty due to bans on group tours are once again crowded with tourists.


Since the nation's "living with COVID-19" policy allows for group tours to resume, the island's tourism industry is beginning to see a recovery.


From small guest houses to five star hotels, many accommodation businesses are reaching capacity.
However, some local hotels are having trouble resuming their businesses.


After many months of reduced or suspended business operations due to the pandemic, it's now proving difficult to hire new employees.


Some hotel owners are even hesitant to hire workers, as the social distancing level can be heightened at any time, if infection rates rise.


Meanwhile, travel agencies are failing to employ tour guides in a timely manner, even though many want to take reservations for guided group tours.


A lack of personnel resources in the tourism sector may negatively affect the quality of events organized in Jeju for the foreseeable future.


Daily life may be slowly going back to normal, but COVID-19 infections remain a problem nationwide. So for now, Jeju's tourism industry will have to wait a while longer before it can make the most of this long-awaited opportunity.

단체관광객 '봇물'…영업 못하고 속앓이만

제주국제공항 주차장입니다.

쉴새 없이 밀려오는 단체 관광객들로
그동안 텅비었던
전세버스 전용 주차장이 혼잡합니다.

이달부터 위드코로나 전환으로
사실상 단체 여행이 허용되면서
관광객들이 밀려들고 있기 때문입니다.

실제 관광호텔과 휴양콘도미니엄 등 고급 관광호텔은 물론이고
일반 숙박시설도 객실이 모자라 예약난을 보일 정돕니다.

하지만 이런 상황 속에서도
일부 호텔 등 숙박시설은
여전히 영업을 재개하지 못하고 속앓이만 하고 있습니다.

코로나19 장기화로 호텔 영업 재개를 위해 필요한 인력을
고용하기가 쉽지 않기 때문입니다.

또 일부 고용주들은 언제든지 이전처럼
사회적거리두기가 강화될 지 몰라
채용을 결정하는 자체가 쉽지 않습니다.


또 호텔 뿐만 아니라 여행사들도
최근 단체관광 예약문의가 쇄도하는 가운데
떠난 관광가이드 등을 제때 고용하지 못하는 실정입니다.

이 같은 상황이 지속될 경우
앞으로 대형 관광이벤트가
제주에서 원할히 진행될 지도 우려스러운 상황입니다.

단계적 일상회복 전환이 이뤄졌지만 여전히 집단감염이 발생하는 등
불안감이 확산되면서
제주관광업계가 제대로 대응하지 못하고 있습니다.
