137 species of plant seeds native to Jeju have recently been stored in a permanent storage.

The Jeju Techno Park Biodiversity Research Institute said it donated 220 seeds of 137 species including Shiromi, Jeju Hwanggi, and Hwanggeun last month to the Baekdudaegan Global Seed Vault, a permanent storage facility for wild plant seeds at the National Baekdudaegan Arboretum.

The seeds are rare specialty seeds among plants native to Jeju.

A seed vault located in (봉화군) Bonghwa-gun, (경상북도) Gyeongsangbuk-do, is a facility used to permanently store various seeds for utilizing when its species is endangered. The plant is known as the Noah's Ark of plants, and there are only two in the world.

제주에서 자생하는 식물 종자 137종이 최근 국가 영구저장시설에 보관됐습니다.

제주테크노파크 생물종다양성연구소는 국립백두대간수목원 야생식물종자 영구저장시설인 '백두대간 글로벌 시드볼트'에 시로미와 제주황기, 황근 등 137종에 220점의 종자를 지난달 기탁했다고 밝혔습니다.

이들 종자들은 제주에서 자생하는 식물 가운데 우선 선별된 특산, 희귀 종자들입니다.

경북 봉화군에 있는 시드볼트는 각종 종자를
최후의 순간 활용을 목적으로 영구저장하기 위한 시설로 식물판 노아의 방주라 불리며 세계에 단 두 곳 뿐입니다.
