Marine Debris


This is the coast of (신흥리) Sinheung-ri, (조천읍) Jocheon-eup, Jeju City.
The coast is littered with marine debris.
Our reporting team picked up the trash.
In less than 10 minutes, a mountain of trash was piled up.

All sorts of trash can be found; from beverage bottles to medicine bottles.
The bottle of disinfectant still has liquid.

Looking closely, labels in some bottles are written in Chinese or Japanese.
They are believed to have washed ashore from abroad and brought here by the tide.


The situation is the same on the nearby coast.
From bottles of powdered milk formula to water bottles with labels in foreign languages and household waste.
Bottles of chemicals are also thrown around.
People who visit the sea in anticipation of a wonderful view frown.

I often come here to fish. It's like this every day. Volunteers and students come and collect trash, but there is always trash here.

I'm on a trip to this island. It's ugly here. I don't understand why the provincial office and locals working in the fishing industry just leave the coast ugly and dirty. The sea is their means of living.


Especially in winter, marine waste is being pushed into the peninsula from abroad by the northwest wind.

Over the past four years, the proportion of foreign waste among marine debris collected across the country has increased every year.

In the case of Jeju, it is found that litter is washing ashore from foreign countries to the island's east coast. But there are no clear solutions other than collection.

About 20,000 tons of marine debris are collected every year from Jeju.
Without fundamental measures, the sea is suffering.





제주 해안 점령한 해양쓰레기…외국산까지




제주시 조천읍 신흥리 해안가입니다.
곳곳에 잔뜩 버려져 있는 쓰레기가 눈에 띕니다.
취재진이 해안가에 있는 쓰레기를 직접 주워봤습니다.

10분도 되지 않아 금세 한가득 쌓입니다.

각종 음료수 병부터 약병, 소독약까지 버려져 있습니다.

심지어 소독약은 다 쓰지 않아
내용물이 아직 남아있는 상태입니다.

자세히 살펴보니
표면에는 한자와 일본어가 쓰여 있습니다.
조류를 타고 외국에서 떠밀려 온 것으로 추정됩니다.


인근 해안도 상황은 마찬가지입니다.

외국산 분유부터 물병, 생활 쓰레기까지.
화학물질도 아무렇게나 나뒹굽니다.

멋진 풍경을 기대하며
바다를 찾은 사람들은 눈살을 찌푸립니다.

낚시하러 자주 옵니다. 오는데 매일 이렇습니다. (쓰레기를) 치우고 해도 학생들도 치우고 했는데도 막 이렇게 (버려져 있죠).

제주도 여행을 왔는데 좀 그렇네요. (보기가) 안 좋은 것 같아요. 이건 내가 볼 때 제주도에서 많이 청소도 하고 우리 어민들이 (바다는) 자기들이 살 길인데 왜 이렇게 (쓰레기를) 버리는가 한심스럽게 느껴집니다.


특히 겨울에는 북서풍을 타고
외국에서 우리나라로
해양쓰레기가 밀려 들어오고 있는데,


최근 4년 동안
전국에서 수거된 해양쓰레기 가운데

외국발 쓰레기가 차지하는 비중은
해마다 늘어나고 있는 것으로 나타났습니다.


제주의 경우 동쪽 해안을 중심으로
외국에서 쓰레기가
떠밀려 오는 것으로 파악되고 있는데,
수거 외에 뾰족한 대책도 없습니다.

매년 제주에서 수거되는 해양 쓰레기는 2만 톤 안팎.

근본적인 대책없이
수거만 반복하는 사이
제주 바다는 몸살을 앓고 있습니다.
