Jeju Spring Wildfires, Caution



The grass growing among the trees has turned entirely into ash.
The trees are charred, and on one side, red flames flicker with smoke.
The fire started when a spark from burning trash spread to the surrounding wild grass.


According to the cause, fires due to negligence, such as trash burning or cigarette butts, account for 81.4% of all cases.


An experiment was conducted to see how dangerous it is when a spark lands on dry leaves.


When a cigarette butt is placed among a pile of hay, gray smoke begins to emerge.

The spot where the cigarette butt is placed starts to burn black, and in 30 seconds, flames quickly spread around.


The temperature of the hay pile, which was around 700 degrees when the flames started, soared to 900 degrees in just 2 minutes.

The heat accumulates inside the hay pile, causing the flames to spread instantly.


Even after the flames have died down, the internal temperature remains over 600 degrees Celsius.


Especially in the spring, the weather is dry and the wind blows moderately, making it easy for fires to start, so extra caution is needed.

The temperature is most likely to cause a fire between 20 and 22 degrees, and the wind speed that is most conducive to fire is between 1.5m/s and 3m/s. I can say that spring and autumn are the seasons when fires are most likely to occur.

'순식간에 화르르' 들불 화재 주의보


나무 사이에 자라던 풀이 온통 잿더미로 변했습니다.

나무 곳곳이 검게 그을렸고,
한 쪽에서는 연기와 함께 시뻘건 불길이 이글거립니다.

쓰레기를 태우던 중 불씨가 주위 야초지로 번지면서 불이 난 겁니다.


최근 5년 사이 제주에서 발생한 들불 화재는 모두 150여 건.

특히 날씨가 건조한 봄철인 3월에서 5월 사이에 집중되고 있습니다.


원인별로는
쓰레기 소각이나 담배꽁초 등
부주의로 인한 화재가 전체의 81.4%로
대부분을 차지하는 것으로 나타났습니다.


실제로 건조한 잎에 불씨가 버려지면
얼마나 위험한지 실험해 봤습니다.

건초 더미 사이에 담배꽁초를 넣자
뿌연 연기가 나기 시작합니다.

담배꽁초가 놓인 자리가
까맣게 타 들어가기 시작하고
30초 뒤 순식간에 주위로 불길이 번집니다.

불꽃이 올라올 당시
700도 정도였던 건초 더미의 온도는
2분 만에 900도까지 치솟습니다.

건초 더미 안에으로 열이 축적되면서
순식간이 불길이 번지는 겁니다.

불길이 잦아든 이후에도
내부 온도는
600도 넘게 유지되고 있는 것을 확인할 수 있습니다.

특히 봄철에는
날씨가 건조하고 바람이 적당하게 불면서
불이 나기 쉬운 조건인 만큼 각별히 유의해야 합니다.

20도에서 22도가 가장 (쉽게) 화재가 발생할 수 있는 온도고요. 바람은 초속 1.5m ~ 3m가 가장 화재가 (쉽게) 발생할 수 있는 바람의 속도입니다. 요즘 같은 봄철, 가을철이 화재가 가장 많이 발생할 수 있는 조건이라고 말씀드릴 수 있겠습니다.


건조한 봄철에는
작은 불씨도 큰 불로 이어질 수 있는 만큼

소방당국은 담뱃불을 비롯해
야외에서의 불씨 관리에
각별히 주의해야 한다고 당부했습니다.
