More Fern Harvesters Losing Their Way

It was March 31st, around 9:30 AM.


A report was filed from (상창리) Sangchang-ri, (안덕면) Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo, about someone who lost their way while picking ferns.


A rescue dog was deployed and a woman in her 60s who had lost her way was found safe, with no health issues reported.


Prior to this, on March 29th, two men harvesting ferns near (덕천리) Deokcheon-ri, (구좌읍) Gujwa-eup, Jeju City, also lost their way.

They were rescued after about 40 minutes thanks to a joint search by rescue teams and dogs.

With fern harvesting season underway, there has been an increase in such incidents of people getting lost.

Over the last five years, there have been 190 incidents of fern harvesters getting lost in Jeju, primarily in April and May.


So far this year, up until last month, there have already been eight reported cases of people getting lost while picking ferns.

These incidents occur when individuals, engrossed in harvesting, unknowingly venture deep into the mountains and lose their way.


To prevent such incidents, it is crucial to follow basic safety rules.


When picking ferns, avoid venturing deep into the forest unnecessarily and use landmarks or signs to periodically check your location.

When you go out to harvest ferns, it's important to go in groups of at least two and to be prepared for emergencies by carrying ample water, warm clothing, a mobile phone, and a whistle to avoid accidents.

The fire service has strategically positioned rescue dogs in anticipation of potential incidents.


Sending out rescue dogs into thorny, densely wooded areas that are difficult for humans to access has proven effective.

Over the past year, rescue dogs have been deployed in Jeju, where they have actively participated in approximately 50 search operations.

In the forest, the underbrush is so thick that even drones can have difficulty finding missing persons since it's not an open area. Rescue dogs can navigate through the dense forest and conduct precise searches, making them particularly effective in such situations.

As spring arrives and the fern harvesting season begins, awareness is crucial to avoid losing one’s way in Jeju’s countryside.




고사리철 길 잃음 사고 잇따라, "주의해야"

지난달 31일, 오전 9시 30분쯤.
서귀포시 안덕면 상창리에서
고사리를 꺾다 길을 잃었다는 신고가 접수됐습니다.

소방 구조견이 투입돼
길을 잃은 60대 여성을 찾아냈고
건강에는 별다른 이상이 없는 것으로 알려졌습니다.

이보다 앞선 지난달 29일에도
제주시 구좌읍 덕천리 인근에서
고사리를 채취하던 남성 2명이 길을 잃었다가

소방 구조대와 구조견이
합동수색을 벌인 끝에 40여분 만에 구조됐습니다.

최근 고사리철이 시작되면서 길 잃음 사고가 잇따르고 있습니다.



최근 5년 사이 제주에서 발생한
고사리 채취객 길 잃음 사고는 모두 190건.

주로 4월과 5월에 집중적으로 발생했습니다.


올들어서는 지난달까지
벌써 8건의 길 잃음 사고가 발생한 것으로 나타났습니다.

고사리를 따는 데 열중해
자신도 모르는 사이
깊은 산속으로 들어가다가 길을 잃는 겁니다.

길 잃음 사고를 예방하기 위해서는
기본 안전수칙을 지키는 것이 가장 중요합니다.

고사리를 채취할 때는
무리하게 깊은 숲으로 들어가지 말고,
주변 표지판 등을 통해
중간중간 자신의 위치를 확인하는 게 좋습니다.

고사리를 채취하러 가실 때에는 2인 이상 동행하셔서 이동하시고 비상시를 대비해서 충분한 물과 두꺼운 옷 그리고 휴대폰, 호루라기 등을 꼭 챙기셔서 안전(사고를) 예방하는 것이 가장 중요하겠습니다.

소방도 만일의 사고에 대비하기 위해
119 구조견을 전진 배치해 놓고 있습니다.

가시가 많고 숲이 우거진
곶자왈의 특성상
사람이 들어가기 힘든 곳에
구조견을 투입되면서 성과를 내고 있습니다.

지난해 제주에 119구조견이 투입된 이후
최근까지 50여 건의 수색 현장에서 활약하고 있습니다.

(곶자왈은) 수풀이 되게 우거져가지고 드론이 투입되더라도 개활지가 아니기 때문에 구조 대상자 발견이 어려울 수가 있습니다. 그때 구조견은 곶자왈 숲 사이사이를 지나다니면서 정밀하게 수색이 가능하기 때문에 그런 실종 상황에서 구조견을 활용하면 좀 더 (수색 작업이) 특화된다고 할 수 있습니다.

길 잃음 사고가 잇따르고 있는 만큼 각별한 주의가 요구됩니다.
