Jeju Faces Rising Sea Temperatures


The sea temperature around Jeju Port has exceeded the high temperature pre-warning threshold of 25°C.

In the (마라도) Marado Islet area of (대정) Daejeong, where fish farms are concentrated, the water temperature soared to 26.3°C Friday afternoon.


The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries issued a 'caution' level high temperature crisis warning for Jeju waters on the 11th.

This year's temperature distribution is similar to the same period last year, which saw the most significant high temperature damage in the past five years.

Last year, high sea temperatures caused the death of approximately one million flatfish in about 50 fish farms in the province, resulting in damages amounting to 4.65 billion won.

The damage from high sea temperatures, which was only 350 million won in 2021, increased more than tenfold in just two years.

The number of days with high temperature warnings, issued when the temperature exceeds 28°C, also increased from 35 days in 2021 to 55 days last year, an increase of 20 days.

This year, the expansion of the North Pacific high pressure is expected to make summer sea temperatures about 1°C higher than average.

It is also predicted that high temperature warnings, which were issued at the end of July last year, will be issued earlier this year and last for more than a month.


Fish farms are preparing for oxygen deficiency and reduced immunity due to high temperatures, but they are anxious as sea temperatures may rise even more than last year.

When the temperature exceeds 23-25°C, it starts becoming tropical, so it's really tough. It's even harder for fish farms in Moseulpo and the western regions without underground saltwater aquifers. If the temperature rises, conditions will worsen compared to last year, leading to mass deaths.

The Marine and Fisheries Research Institute has formed a high temperature response team with Jeju City and Seogwipo City and the National Institute of Fisheries Science to strengthen monitoring and temperature management, and will operate a mobile hospital twice a month for rapid inspection of fish farm diseases.

During the high temperature period, various diseases can occur, so we will operate a mobile hospital in a triangular system with the National Institute of Fisheries Science and the Fish Farming Cooperative.

As low salinity water flows in and high temperature phenomena occur, immediate prior inspections and damage prevention support measures are required for village fishing grounds and fish farms.

제주항 일대 바다 수온이
고수온 예비특보 발효 기준인 25도를 넘었습니다.

양식장이 밀집한 대정 일대 마라도 수온은
오늘 오후 26.3도까지 치솟았습니다.

해양수산부는 지난 11일을 기해
제주해역에
고수온 위기 경보 '주의' 단계를 발령했습니다.

올해는 최근 5년 간 고수온 피해가 가장 컸던
지난해
같은 시기와 비슷한 수온 분포를 보이고 있습니다.

지난해 바다 고수온으로
도내 양식장 50여 곳에서 사육 중이던
넙치 약 100만 마리가 폐사해
46억 5천 만원의 피해가 발생했습니다.

지난 2021년 3억 5천만 원에 불과했던
고수온 피해가
2년 만에 10배 이상 급증한 겁니다.

수온이 28도 이상일 때 내려지는 고수온 특보 발효 일수도
2021년 35일에서 지난해 55일로 20일이나 늘어났습니다.


올해는 북태평양 고기압이 확장하면서
여름철 수온이
평년보다 1도 가량 높을 것으로 전망되고 있습니다.

지난해 7월 말 발효됐던 고수온 특보가
올해는 더 앞당겨지고
한달 이상 장기화될 것이라는 관측도 나오고 있습니다.

양식장마다 고수온에 따른 산소 부족과
면역력 저하에 대비하곤 있지만
지난해보다 수온이 더 오를 수 있어 불안해하고 있습니다.

23도에서 25도가 넘어가면 점점 열대화가 돼 가니까 너무 힘들죠.
염지하해수가 없는 모슬포나 서부지역 양식장들은 더 힘들죠.
(수온이 오르면) 작년 대비 해서 또 상태가 안 좋아지니까 대량폐사가
일어나겠죠.

해양수산연구원은
행정시, 국립수산과학원 등과
고수온 대응반을 구성해
모니터링과 수온 관리를 강화하고

신속한 양식어류 질병 검사를 위해
찾아가는 이동식 병원도 월 2회 운영하기로 했습니다.
