Up to 3 Years in Prison for Viewers of Deepfake

Possession or viewing of sexually exploitative content made with deepfake technology now carries up to three years in prison.

The government passed an amendment to the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Violence Crimes.

Under the amendment, anyone found possessing, purchasing, storing, or viewing deepfake sex exploitation content can face up to three years in prison or fines of up to 30 million won.

Threats involving deepfake content will also be punishable by at least one year of imprisonment.
