Contemporary artists from six Asian countries, including China, Vietnam, and Indonesia, have come together for a special exhibition here in Jeju. Suejin Choi reports.

Underwater self-portrait, Pham Huy Thong (Vietnam)
A large, woeful face fills the canvas… it is submerged… but the tip of the head peeps out on top of the water. The face symbolizes an inner desire for peace and quiet… while the head portrays the chaos that lies in this world.
It’s a self-portrait by Vietnamese contemporary artist Pham Huy Thong (팜 후이 통).
And a mother who doesn’t lose her smile despite the cold and hunger…
This picture describes the great strides made by the people of Tibet despite many hardships, illustrated by a Chinese artist.

Jeju-Asian Contemporary Art Special Exhibition
Through Nov. 8, Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art
The Jeju-Asian Contemporary Art Special Exhibition is underway at the Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art, with works by 22 artists from 6 countries here in Asia, including China, India and Vietnam.
The theme of the exhibition is “Asia, Talk to Asia”... and 70 pieces are on display by artists influenced by various social changes… and the exhibition is divided into three categories: Human, Life, and Nature.

Visitors get the chance to see the similarities and differences of various Asian contemporary artworks… and gain a broad understanding of Asia’s history and culture. It is also an opportunity for Jeju residents to learn ways to showcase its culture to the world through art.
