Police uncover year’s first case of illegal mandarin coloring
41 tons of unripe fruit in Hyodon-dong, Seogwipo

Authorities have uncovered the first case this year of someone illegally coloring outdoor-grown mandarin oranges.

A joint investigative team that consists of officials from Jeju City, Seogwipo, and the provincial police found the violation Wednesday at an agricultural cooperative in (효돈동) Hyodon-dong, Seogwipo. The cooperative was planning to ship to the mainland 41 tons of unripe fruit that had been colored to appear like it was ready to eat.

The person or people involved allegedly bought the substandard mandarins from greenhouse growers.

The team fined the cooperative 8.64 million won and will destroy all the fruit.

'강제착색' 비상품 감귤 유통 첫 적발

비상품 감귤 유통행위가 올해 처음으로 적발됐습니다.

제주도와 서귀포시, 제주자치경찰대로 구성된 감귤유통지도단속반은 어제(9일) 서귀포시 효돈동에서 미숙과와 강제착색한 감귤 41톤을 도외로 유통하려 한 모 영농조합번인을 적발했습니다.

적발된 영농법인은 상품 기준에 미치지 못하는 비가림 하우스 감귤을 밭떼기 거래를 통해 사들인 뒤 강제착색해 판매하려 한 것으로 알려졌습니다.

단속반은 해당 영농법인에 과태료 864만 원을 부과하고 비상품 감귤은 전량 폐기할 계획입니다.
