Seoul requests local festival name change
‘Jeju Cherry Blossom Festival’ to stay for now

The central government has asked that Jeju province change the name of its annual Cherry Blossom Festival.

According to Jeju officials, the Korea Forest Service has advised cities and provinces to opt for the title “Spring Flower Festival” over “Cherry Blossom Festival”.

These traditional celebrations are held nationwide, including Jeju Island. However, the suggestion is that given public opinion, the new name is more appropriate.

Though the province has taken Seoul’s recommendation under consideration, local authorities have been holding the Jeju Cherry Blossom Festival for 24 years, and the tree is designated Natural Monument No. one-hundred fifty-nine.

For now the province will seek out the opinions of festival organizers and experts and then make a final determination.

이에 따라 제주시도 제주왕벚꽃축제도 명칭 변경을 놓고 고민하고 있습니다.

제주시는 천연기념물 159호인 왕벚나무을 알리기 위해 지난 24년동안 '제주왕벚꽃축제'를 열어온 만큼 쉽게 명칭을 바꿀수 없는 입장입니다.

이에 따라 제주시는 축제 명칭을 고수하는 방향으로 가닥을 잡고
축제위원과 전문가 등의 의견을 수렴할 방침입니다.
