Gov’t funds to support faltering Jeju mandarin market

State funds will be used to stabilize prices of mandarin oranges and prevent low-quality fruit from entering the market.

Kim Woo-nam, chief of the National Assembly’s Agricultural and Fisheries Committee, said Thursday that the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has set aside 1.6 billion won to stabilize prices of agricultural products.

The funds will also be directed at removing 20,000 tons of low-quality mandarin oranges from the market. In total, some 40,000 tons of below-par mandarin oranges will be filtered out of the system.

Similar measures have previously been announced by the provincial government.
