Jeju to get Forest Aviation HQ in 2017
The Korea Forest Service’s Forest Aviation Headquarters announced on Tuesday that it will establish a Jeju office at Halla Eco Forest by October 2017. The new facility will have a hangar that will accommodate two firefighting helicopters, which will enable authorities to quickly respond to forest fires.

26m+ use Jeju International Airport this year
According to the Korea Airports Corporation, more than 26 million people have already used Jeju International Airport this year, a new annual record. That’s already 12 percent more than all of last year.

Province will no longer set arrival target
The Jemin Ilbo is reporting on the provincial government’s decision to stop setting a yearly target for tourist arrivals. It will instead focus on other metrics, including length of stay and tourist spending.

Drunk driving caused 1,988 accidents in 5 years
According to the Korea Road Traffic Authority, drunk driving resulted in nearly 2,000 car accidents in Jeju between 2010 and 2014. Seventy people were killed in those crashes, and nearly 3,200 were injured.

Local farmers want disaster zone designation
The frequent rain that began in November has devastated field crops and mandarin oranges. The plunging quality of the produce means prices have dropped considerably. The Halla Ilbo is reporting that local farmers therefore want the island to be declared a special disaster zone.

92% ‘will recommend Suwolbong Peak to others’
According to the provincial government, 92 percent of the people who participated in the (수월봉) Suwolbong Peak Geotrail Walking Event say they will recommend the trail to their friends and families. 250 hikers were surveyed during the August event.

Yonhap is reporting that North Korea's top party official handling inter-Korean affairs has been killed in a traffic accident. Kim Yang-gon was 73.

SK soldier found dead inside DMZ
A South Korean soldier was found dead on the southern side of the Demilitarized Zone early Wednesday morning in a gun-related incident. The private was found with gunshot wounds in the central east border area of Hwacheon, Gangwon Province, around 3:00 a.m. An investigation is underway.
