Ed. office rejects request to finance program
The education ministry says Jeju’s local education office should submit a budget that includes funding for the Nuri Program, a free childcare program for children aged three to five. The provincial office of education has rejected the call, insisting the program be funded by the national government.

More cars than people in new urban center
The Jemin Ilbo says cars outnumber residents in Jeju’s new urban center. Just under 100,000 people live in Yeon-dong and Nohyeong-dong, but more than 150,000 vehicles are registered there.

Local gas prices are at a seven-year low. According to the Korea National Oil Corporation, the average local price on Monday was 1,421 won per liter, while diesel was just 1,188 won.

First leased electric vehicle batteries delivered
Jeju has begun leasing out batteries for electric vehicles. The first five leased batteries were delivered to a car rental service center on Monday. The leases are financed by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the provincial government.

Seoul raises FMD alert level
South Korea on Tuesday raised its foot-and-mouth disease alert level one notch following its first confirmed case in nine months. According to the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, pigs at a farm in Gimje, 260 kilometers south of Seoul, tested positive for the highly contagious disease.
