Jocheon seeks accreditation as Ramsar Wetland City
Decision to proceed with bid will be made by year’s end

Jocheon-eup’s Dongbaek Dongsan was designated a Ramsar Wetland in 2011, and the community is now vying for accreditation as a Ramsar Wetland City.

The provincial government said it has formed a local committee with members from the Jocheon community, experts, and environmental groups. The committee will be tasked with managing and restoring wetlands, operating management programs, providing information on the value of wetlands to the general public, and conducting educational programs.

The Ministry of Environment will this year evaluate five sites, including Jeju’s Dongbaek Dongsan, and choose one or two by December to apply for accreditation as a Ramsar Wetland City.

람사르습지로 지정된 동백동산의 조천읍을
람사르습지 도시로 인증받기 위한 지원사업이 추진됩니다.

제주시는 이를 위해 조천읍 주민대표와 전문가, 환경단체 등이 참여하는
지역관리위원회를 구성하고 람사르습지 도시로 인증받기 위한 세부사업들을 추진해 나갈 계획입니다.

주요 사업은 지역관리위원회 운영과 습지복원,
관리프로그램 운영, 습지 가치 정보 제공, 교육프로그램 운영 등 입니다.

환경부는 오는 12월쯤 제주의 동백동산을 비롯한 5개 후보지에 대한 평가를 통해
최종 후보지를 선정하고 람사르사무국에 신청서를 낼 계획입니다.
