Unique arched buildings to be restored
Structures at Isidore Farm date to the 1960s

Authorities will restore some unique arched buildings in Jeju that have been abandoned for years despite being regarded as modern cultural heritage.

The Father (임피제) Yim Pi-jae Society says the arched buildings inside the Isidore Farm in Geumak-ri, Hallim-eup will be refurbished.

The site will first be evaluated by the provincial government in order to gain recognition as a national cultural heritage site. Once designated, the Cultural Heritage Administration will provide funding for the restoration.

The buildings date to the 1960s when P. J. McGlinchey, a Catholic priest from Ireland known as Yim Pi-jae in Korean, had them built for housing and storage facilities. About 20 of them remain.

아치형 건축물 '테쉬폰' 복원 추진

제주의 근대문화유산이면서도
제대로 보호 관리되지 않고 있는
아치형 건축물 '테쉬폰'이 복원될 전망입니다.

임피제 신부 기념사업회는
제주시 한림읍 금악리 성이시돌 목장 안에 있는
테쉬폰을 복원한다고 밝혔습니다.

복원 작업은 제주도의 실사를 거쳐
테쉬폰이 문화재로 지정되면
문화재청의 예산이 투입될 것으로 전해졌습니다.

테쉬폰은 임피제 신부가 1960년대부터 짓기 시작해
주택과 창고 등의 용도로 도내에 200여 채 이상 보급됐지만
지금은 대부분이 철거돼
20채 미만이 남아 있는 것으로 파악되고 있습니다.
