2019 high school entrance guidelines announced
Less emphasis on minor subjects

The Jeju Provincial Office of Education has announced high school entrance assessment guidelines the 2019 academic year.

Students entering high school in 2019 will be placed in schools based solely on their middle school grades, with the percentage of major subjects, such as Korean, English and Math, in the assessment to go up from the current 70 percent to 80 percent of the total.

Ten percent of the assessment will be based on academic scores from the first semester of the first year of middle school - the second semester won’t be considered, as it will be a so-called “free-semester” during which students are encouraged to explore career options without worrying about exams. Another 30 percent of the high school assessment will be based on the second year, and the remaining 60 percent will be based on grades from the third and final year of middle school.

Superintendent of education Lee Seok-moon said his office will be attributing less weight to minor subjects in a bid to allow schools to focus more on varied educational activities.

교과 성적 반영 비율은 확대되고 비교과성적은 축소됐습니다.

이석문 제주도교육감은 오늘(31일) 이 같은 내용을 담은
2019학년도 고등학교 입학전형을 확정해 발표했습니다.

확정 계획에 따르면 당초 교과 성적 반영 비율은 70에서 80%로 늘었고
비교과성적은 30%에서 20%로 축소됐습니다.

학년별 성적 반영비율은 1학년 10%, 2학년 30%, 3학년 60%를 반영하며
자유학기제가 시행되는 1학년 2학기 교과성적은 반영하지 않기로 했습니다.

이 교육감은 비교과 성적 비율이 높으면
다양한 교육활동이 위축될 수 있어 이를 축소했다고 밝혔습니다.
