Jeju Hyanggyo Daeseongjeon to become national treasure
‘Unique example of original Confucian architecture’

The Cultural Heritage Administration has announced that it plans to register a part of the (제주향교) Jeju Hyanggyo Confucian School and Shrine as a National Treasure.

The (대성전) Daeseongjeon is one of the shrine’s two main halls. It houses ancestral tablets and the administration says it is valuable because much of its Confucian architecture remains in its original form and therefore needs state-level protection.

After a month-long notice period, the Daeseongjeon will be named a State-Designated Cultural Property and National Treasure (국가지정문화재 보물).

국가지정문화재 보물로 지정될 전망입니다.

문화재청은 제주향교 대성전을 국가지정문화재 보물로 지정 예고하면서
제주향교 대성전은 창건 이건 이후 현 위치에서 큰 변형 없이
원래의 모습을 유지하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.

또한 대성전은 제주도 유교건축의 특성을 잘 담고 있어
체계적인 보호가 필요하다고 덧붙였습니다.

이에따라 제주향교 대성전에 대해
30일간의 예고 기간 동안 의견을 수렴한 뒤
문화재위원회 심의를 거쳐 보물로 지정할 예정입니다.
