‘Geomun Oreum last erupted 8,000 years ago’
Parasitic volcano may have erupted much more recently than thought

A new study suggests Jeju’s Geomun Oreum (거문오름) erupted 8,000 years ago… not 200,000 as previously thought.

The World Heritage and Hallasan Research Center says it recently extracted ancient soil from the parasitic volcano. Researchers used radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating methods, and found that the soil dated back 8,000 years.

This evidence contradicts previous estimates that Geomun Oreum last erupted 200,000 years ago.

The center views the latest findings as credible, based on the good state of the parasitic volcano itself and because other sediment had not piled up on the tested soil.

제주특별자치도 세계유산한라산연구원은 최근
거문오름에서 분출한 용암류와 송이층에서 토양을 채취해
방사성 탄소연대와 광여기루미네선스연대 측정법을 사용한 결과
지금으로부터 8천년 전으로 나타났다고 밝혔습니다.

이같은 화산분출시기는
기존 20만년 전에 비해 19만년 이상 앞당겨진 것입니다.

세계유산한라산연구원은
만장굴을 비롯한 거문오름용암동굴계 내부 구조들의 경우
현재 보존상태가 양호할 뿐 아니라
2차 퇴적물도 없어 이같은 주장을 뒷받침하고 있다고 주장했습니다.
